Class Reflection

Coming into English 102, I was ready for a basic literature class where we read and write essays about what we read. I thought we would read a few short stories and have to write a bunch of essays about the literary devices used in the stories. Thinking of literature, I believed we were going to read a novel throughout the year. However, I was very surprised with Professor Candia's passion for teaching literature and the material that she taught us. She really wants every student to appreciate what they're reading. In high school I was mainly only taught that all forms of writing have a theme and a literary device. However, Professor Candia taught me that every single form of writing means so much more than anyone could imagine.

Professor Candia taught that short stories contain hidden messages of the setting of the story. She also taught that poems bring light to societal issues without actually saying what is wrong in the world. I was never interested in reading poems or plays because I never had the patience to sit and read. But now I feel excited to read more poems and try to understand the deeper message in a poem. Now I want to try and find some creativity in my own mind and see if I can come up with a few poems of my own. I would never have been interested in the literature field without this class. All in all, there is so much more that can be appreciated in literature, and I now understand this thanks to Professor Candia and English 102.

I feel like my writing has improved a lot thanks to Professor Candia. My english 101 teacher did not give me much criticism as a writer so I thought that I was a good writer. However, Professor Candia changed that for me. She allowed me to realize that my writing is not as good as a thought. I now understand how to properly use MLA format in my writing, along with proper citations both in-text and in my works cited page. I also feel more confident to think and put my thoughts on paper. I now feel comfortable having to write about a piece of literature, and actually understanding what I am writing about. As a thinker, I feel like I can figure out the deeper meanings in all forms of writing and interpret what is being said.
